Why I call it Tao is because I chose the greatest of all that can be used as a name. If you try to determine why the term Tao is used, it is because it is great. Yet whatever is connected with the great necessarily has divisions. Having divisions Tao would lose its position as the Ultimate. Therefore, it is said, “If (reluctantly I am) forced to give it a name, I shall call it great.”

“To move away” means to be in motion, which is not to hold on to the substance of the great. Tao operates everywhere and reaches everything. Therefore it is said to “move away.”

To be “far away” is to reach the limit. Since it operates everywhere and nowhere does it not penetrate, it is not limited to just “moving away.” Therefore it is said to be “far away.” But even then it does not remain where it is, being in its substance independent. Therefore it is said to “return.”
